A little something to remember...

Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day that says,
"I will try again tomorrow."

Curtain Up!

The Broadway strike is over...FINALLY! White Christmas opens tonight in Toronto! It's an exciting day and week for theatre-goers. It seems we've been in previews and rehearsals forever, but I've only been here 3 weeks. Time is flying, but it also feels like I've been here forever! I need to find a better way to deal with the cold.

Broadway on Strike

Even though my union says I'm supposed to support the strike, I don't. I'm completely against it, and I feel like both sides (the stagehands and the producers) are acting like spoiled little rich kids. I'm losing a great deal of respect for both sides as the strike progresses.

tech....day five

last night we made it thru act one, after finishing teching the entire show in the afternoon. it's going well. teching a show is slow and tedious always. it finds it's rhythm and comes into it's own, but it's a slow moving process. people are generally in good spirits though, so it's easy.

tech....day three

i'm going in with a clear head and not letting yesterday get me down. will report more later.

tech...day two

much more stressful day today. tensions flared a few times today, and one instance made me question whether the job is really worth it.

tech....day one

tech rehearsal for the show went really well today. we got 5 scenes in act 1 onstage. it's always nice to come back to this show every year....i love it so much, that it's almost like coming home to visit an old, close friend who you love dearly. it's fun to dust off the sets and costumes, and put the show back up year after year....especially knowing how much holiday spirit and joy it brings to the audiences.

Glitzmas. Titsmas.

So...it's finally happened. The Radio City Christmas Show has become the Glitz and Titsmas show. Ever since I've been here, the show has always followed the typical cheeseball secular Christmas numbers with a beautiful living Nativity. This year, I am horrified to report, the Nativity follows a big sparkly number celebrating 75 years, complete with 'raining' mylar glitter that makes a reappearance when the capes of the wisemen stir up what's left on the stage floor. At the end of the beautiful Nativity, ushers stream down the aisles with light-up stars and encourage everyone to light their own up like we're at a circus. So, the last few moments of the Nativity are completely lost to people rummaging around, unwrapping the toy, lighting it, then waving it like we're at Madison Square Garden watching the Ringling Brothers. 'One Solitary Life' has been axed. Now the cast comes back out, bows, the Rockettes come back out and kick, and we have a sing-a-long to a cheeseball cruise ship, theme park version of Joy to the World, complete with singers competing with each other for who can riff more intricately and sing higher. Closing the show with the living Nativity was always something I commended Radio City with since it is called CHRISTmas, but leave it to the new directorial staff to bulldoze the real meaning of the holiday.

first day uv skool

today was my first day of rehearsal for 'white christmas'. the first rehearsal always feels like the first day of school. lots of fun, but a day full of anxiety. will i be 'cool' enough? will people like me? who's gonna talk to me? what if i don't make any friends?

i deal with these crazy thoughts every time i go to do a new show. takes me back to the gloriously awkward days of school.
